In India, digital signature certificates, or DSCs, are essential for guaranteeing safe and legitimate electronic transactions in a number of industries. They make it possible for people, companies, and governmental organizations to digitally sign documents, verify their identities, and preserve data integrity when conducting online transactions.
How E-Sign Digital Signature Services Work
E-Sign is a government-approved digital signature service that allows users to digitally sign documents online using their Aadhaar number and OTP or a digital signature certificate (DSC) issued by a Certifying Authority. It eliminates the need for paper-based signatures.
1. User Authentication
The signer enters their Aadhaar number.
An OTP (One-Time Password) is sent to their registered mobile number.
Alternatively, the signer can use a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC Token) or download-based certificate.
2. Consent & Identity Verification
The user gives explicit consent to digitally sign.
The identity is verified via:
Aadhaar OTP (for Aadhaar-based eSign)
Digital certificate (for DSC-based signing)
3. Document Upload & Signature Application
The document to be signed is uploaded (PDF or other allowed formats).
The eSign gateway applies a legally valid digital signature on the document.
The signature is linked with the signer’s Aadhaar or DSC, timestamped, and encrypted.
4. Digital Signature Certificate Generation
A short-term (temporary) or long-term certificate is issued during the signing process.
This certificate is embedded in the document, showing signer details and timestamp.
5. Download Signed Document
The digitally signed document is ready for download and sharing.
It is tamper-proof and legally valid under the IT Act, 2000 in India.
